This was a lightbox project done for photography, loosely based on the theme "time." We were instructed to create a light box with photographs printed on transparencies in some sort of box with a light behind it, or even just photography that's off the wall or sculptural.
I chose to focus on the idea of memory through time. The boxes (that I happened to find at VV for only $4.99 for the set!) portray a clear memory fading over time in layers of black and white photos on transparencies. Each box is made of 3 layers: a cluster of trees at the back, a single tree, and my sister playing the guitar. It looks best in front of a window so natural light can flood the scene and give it a soft glow.
This piece looks really simple, and it was meant to be. It shows how memories have a tendency to fade away and be forgotten - even the things we see everyday and take for granted may not be with us in another 10 years. Not to say this is something bad; it's quite natural for memories to fade away from us. It's just really interesting to explore through photography, especially since the practice itself is constantly linked with memory and the idea of time.
The project can also be seen as a reminder to appreciate the little things while they are still happening.
