Intimate Skyline

A personal project for fourth year studio: small prints looking at the pieces that make up the intimate skyline of where I live.

Daily Courier Editorial Illustration

My mom, fitness & nutrition coach Tania Gustafson, recently started writing a biweekly health article in the Daily Courier, and I get to make the pictures for it!

I had a one day deadline to produce this first image so I chose to use a really simplified style and illustrate one of the article's main ideas: 4 exercises to do on vacation that can be done pretty much anywhere.

No-Bake White Chocolate Cheesecake

Got another recipe featured on They Draw and Cook! I had a lot of fun playing around with turning hand-letting into vector text in this one.

P.S. Thanks for the recipe, Kych!

Sweet Lips Makeup Artistry

This little project was a really fun business card design and illustration for Sweet Lips Makeup Artistry, a freelance makeup artist based in Sydney, Australia.

The lips are loosely based off Marilyn Monroe (as the client really likes the Monroe era style of Hollywood glamour and sophistication) and the "sweet lips" text is hand-crafted by me.

rrruff

Some recent freelance work for an Australian company that makes dog coats and things.

This isn't something like anything I would normally make, but it was fun to try a new type of project!

Manifesto Illustrations

A short, surreal narrative depicting the idea of finishing the things you start, as all the little things can have a way of building up and taking over.

Here are a few things I've done lately: and surreal portraits and sketches from photos of the Kelvingrove museum in Glasgow.

Some More Reddit Gets Drawn Submission!

If you haven't checked it out already, the subreddit /r/redditgetsdrawn is pretty incredible. Random people post photos of themselves or their loved ones that they want to see in drawing form, and then random redditors that draw actually fill those requests and post their drawings in the comments. Very straightforward. Anyways, it's well worth the browse. I really love seeing how all of the different artists interpret the subject matter and make the portraits their own.

Here are a couple of submissions I've done recently. It's great practice, and if they can bring a smile to someone's face, even better!

Procrastination

Sometimes I procrastinate illustration course work by working on various side projects instead. Here's a look at a few things I've done today.

A quick graphic drawing done in Illustrator for a random on reddit.com/r/redditgetsdrawn:
Playing with textures and shapes in Illustrator to create an abstract background:

And a little manifesto gif made in Illustrator and Photoshop: (begins with "if it isn't there...")

Unfortunately I'm unable to find the source of this quote, but here is where I originally found it.

Figures

This week we have to produce 25 figure drawings using a "range of materials and approaches."

Here are two that I made today.

The first image was inspired by one of the talented performers of the Moscow State Circus I went to see back in December (which was incredible, btw!). The second was created from a wax figure of a woman at the Neanderthal museum in Mettmann, Germany.

5 Panel Illustration of A Newly Learned Skill: French Strawberry Tart

For our most recent project, we were instructed to go out, learn a new skill, and record the process by which we learned said skill. I chose to learn how to make a French Strawberry Tart! - mainly because the wee ones at the farmer's market always look way too delicious. We were then told to illustrate this process in five 60 x 60 mm panels in Adobe Illustrator (woo!).

The process I've illustrated is as follows:

1. Research: scouring all tart recipes on Pinterest for the best looking one.
2. Preparation: collection of necessary ingredients.
3. Reading and understanding the method prior to attempting the tart.
4. Attempting the tart.
5. Success!

How to Make Your Own Guitar

Here's a little instructional concertina on how to make your own guitar from a shelf, a mic, and 6 ruined guitars. Intended to be quirky and humourous, so please don't blame me if your guitar doesn't work properly.
