My First Etsy Sale!

I made my first sale on Etsy today, guys! :D

As you know, I often draw pictures people post on reddit gets drawn as a warm-up or just for fun. The other week I made a really fast ink drawing of someone's late horse as a warm-up before working on these recent posters. The submitter liked my picture so much she wanted to purchase a print of it for her mother!

A great start to September.

Drawings From New York

Here are a bunch of drawings from the other week when I was in New York. Mostly buidlings. Some people. One dog.

Seal Silhouette

Here's the final set of ink silhouettes inspired by my trip to the Scottish National Museum: seals!

I recently found out that seals can be spotted in the sea in places near Edinburgh. Obviously I got way too excited about this, and have now made it a mission to find some seals. Or any kind of sea mammal, actually. Anyone with me?

Kestrel Silhouette

Here's the second set of ink drawings in the series I'm working on inspired by animals from the museum.

This is a Kestrel. I just loved the shape of the taxidermied bird on display.

Irish Elk Silhouette

These ink drawings were inspired by a beautiful Irish Elk skeleton in the National Museum of Scotland. I loved the shapes that the black skeleton created against the bright white of the gallery, and thought it would work great in ink. Then I thought the reverse would look good as well. I like how the positive and negative shapes look together.

I'm planning on doing two more sets like this, and creating a series of three positive and negative silhouettes inspired by animal shapes I've photographed in the museum.

Which drawing do you prefer?

It's Costume Time

Here's a little taste of something I'm considering wearing to a Halloween event this weekend. Can anyone guess the theme?

Drawing Surgery: Experiments With Ink, Gouache, and Observational Drawing

For my first drawing surgery project blog post I've focused on observational drawing and experimented with ink and gouache. I'd never used gouache before today, but have found that it is a lot like working with watercolour.

This drawing was done after observing, sketching, and photographing swans in Hollyrood Park. I wanted to use ink and a brush to draw loose, free lines and capture the movement seen in the swans on the water. Although it was tempting to add a lot more detail to the birds, I kept them simple with quick brush strokes to try something different and achieve a different effect.

Here are some of the animals I've sketched in ink over the past few days from my National Geographic collection.

Bad Composition Drawing

For drawing class we had to create a composition that breaks all the rules of good composition, made up of sketches we did of objects we wouldn't normally draw. I flipped through a couple of National Geographics and sketched a wackload of random things.

The composition turned out really awkward, so I hope this is what the prof is looking for.

The bones are my favourite.

Maybe Crazy

Over the past couple of months, I've been very fortunate to work with my friend Jeff Chimney on creating his album cover, as well as some extra album art. His CD was just released Friday! Check it out.

Below is the album cover plus extra art.

Living Things

For an upcoming drawing project, I've been sketching living things like mad. I managed to do about 35 sketches yesterday of various living things (mostly animals) in ink, sharpie, or graphite.

Below are some samples from my sketchbooks.
